15 “HOLY SHIT!” Movie Moments: The scenes that are unexpected, out-of-nowhere, and stick with you. I tried to stay away from torture-porn and shocking horror-type movies for this one. Blah, blah, blah. Shut up Stephen and show me the fucking clips. To make up for my wordiness, I had so much fun putting this one together I’m going to give you fifteen instead of the usual ten…

15. The Departed

The last ten minutes of this movie is one huge “HOLY SHIT” moment. If you haven’t seen it yet, you DO NOT want to watch this clip.

Man in Jews for Jesus t-shirt sits while well-dressed young man across from him unbuttons shirt, takes out black marker, and writes 'Buddhist 4 Mohammed' on his undershirt, standing and aggressively staring down Jew for Jesus.

Buddhist guy: Give me zee money, Lebowski! I fucks you up! We want zee money, Lebowski! Give us zee money or we fucks you up! [Steps to the left, and in a different German accent] Ya, give us zee money, Lebowski. My girlfriend cut off her toe 'cause she thought we would get zee money. Iss not fair.

Jew for Jesus: [Silent, calm.]

Buddhist guy calmly sits back down and buttons his shirt, turning to small Hispanic boy next to him: And that's where babies come from.

How to date me 101

Do challenge me.
Don’t compete with me.
Don’t tell me I’m gorgeous or smart.
Do tell me I’m unique.
Don’t buy me drinks.
Do buy me dessert.
Don’t stare at my chest.
Do stare in my eyes.
Don’t be authoritative.
Do be assertive.

Do tease me.
Don’t deny me.
Do notice the small things.
Don’t quote poetry.
Do be original.
Don’t be arrogant.
Do be confident.
Don’t ignore my friends.
Do dress well.
Don’t mistake conflict for passion.
Do let me infatuate you.
Don’t let me know it.

Unsanity

The common way we think about the nature of human mind is that it is either sane or insane. LSD hints to us that there is an area of the mind which could be called “unsane” – beyond sanity, and yet not insane.

Think of a circle with a fine split in it at one end is insanity, you go around the circle to sanity, and on the other end of the circle close to insanity but not insanity is “unsanity”. This is perhaps where all the superlative effects of humanity come from.

Not only of art but of science.

And it may be that we could approach it by a thoughtfulwise study of LSD.

Bent- Beautiful Otherness

Beautiful otherness
Love you because of this
Lost in the loveliness
Of your beautiful otherness

Beautiful otherness
I found myself rodderless
You gave me foreverness
And your beautiful otherness

Beautiful otherness
Beautiful otherness

Beautiful otherness
Kind hearts and coronets
Safe in the warm caress
Of your beautiful otherness

When you're right, when you're right
When you're right, right, right with me

Disappearances

Meredith (voiceover): Disappearances happen in science. Disease can suddenly fade away, tumors go missing, and we open someone up to discover the cancer is gone. Its unexplained. It’s rare, but it happens. We call it mis-diagnosis say we never saw it in the first place, any explanation but the truth. That life is full of vanishing acts. If something that we didn’t know we had disappears, do we miss it? If we cannot remember what it was, was it ever there at all?

Izzie: I'm a pretty girl.

Chief: What?

Izzie: I'm not being arrogant, it’s just, it’s just kind of a fact. For a long time I made a career from my looks, so I get it, I'm a pretty girl. And not in a "from a certain angle" way, in an obvious way. It’s the blonde thing and the big boobs thing, big boobs are a key to obvious pretty if you know what I'm saying.

Chief: Dr. Stevens.

Izzie: It’s how men see me. I'm not a smart girl or an interesting girl, I'm a pretty girl. The blonde and the boobs it confuses guys into thinking that I'm someone else. And I'm used to it. And I'm used to them walking away when they realize… But then Denny goes and asks me to marry him.

Chief: Is that why you cut the wires?

Izzie: He doesn't make me feel like I'm a pretty girl. He makes me feel like… like me. I think he might know me. And so, if I did cut the LVAD wire, and I'm not saying that I did, but if I did, then no, I don't feel guilty. And I know that I should. And I would if it were anybody else. But I can't feel anything but happy.

New NIN

Trent Reznor has rolled out the tracklisting for Nine Inch Nails (music)' forthcoming concept album, "Year Zero," and is setting up the album's premise via a series of strange websites, audio files and album leaks.

"This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere," Reznor said in a prepared statement issued last week. "That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more. I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don't. This record is the latter. Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place ... as if it were meant to be. ... The record turned out to be more than a just a record in scale, as you will see over time.

"Part one is Year Zero. Concept record. Sixteen tracks. What's it about? Well, it takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop," he continued. "The world has reached the breaking point--politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth.

"This record is much more of a 'sound collage' than recent efforts from me," Reznor continued. "A lot of it was improvised. It is very tedious describing your own music. It's not just music. It's probably too long, but it felt like the right thing to do to paint the complete picture. It will sound different after a few listens. You can think about it and it will reveal more than you were expecting. You can dance to a lot of it. You can fuck to a lot of it, maybe all of it depending on what you're into..."

"Foolish Games"

You took your coat off and stood in the rain,
You're always crazy like that.
And I watched from my window,
Always felt I was outside looking in on you.
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair,
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care.
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather.

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Well in case you failed to notice,
In case you failed to see,
This is my heart bleeding before you,
This is me down on my knees, and...

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Well, excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else,
Somebody who gave a damn,
Somebody more like myself.

who is appropriate this week (...and always)

Neither Snow

When all of a sudden the city air filled with snow,
the distinguishable flakes
blowing sideways,
looked like krill
fleeing the maw of an advancing whale.

At least they looked that way to me
from the taxi window,
and since I happened to be sitting
that fading Sunday afternoon
in the very center of the universe,
who was in a better position
to say what looked like what,
which thing resembled some other?

Yes, it was a run of white plankton
borne down the Avenue of the Americas
in the stream of the wind,
phosphorescent against the weighty buildings.

Which made the taxi itself,
yellow and slow-moving,
a kind of undersea creature,
I thought as I wiped the fog from the glass,

and me one of its protruding eyes,
an eye on a stem
swiveling this way and that
monitoring one side of its world,
observing tons of water
tons of people
colored signs and lights
and now a wildly blowing race of snow.

And useless in times like these

I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear

accidental events

When I was twelve years old I accidentally substituted salt for sugar in a cake recipe. I baked the cake, iced the cake, and served it up. It looked like a cake, but as soon as you cut into it and took a taste, you knew something else was going on. People are like that, too. Sometimes you just can’t tell what’s on the inside from looking at the outside. Sometimes people are a big surprise, just like the salt cake. Sometimes the surprise turns out to be good. And sometimes the surprise turns out to be bad. And sometimes the surprise is just friggin’ confusing.

At the bus stop

Even in science, we accept that there are unknowns. Incredible truths in the universe that defy all logic and reasoning.

I do not accept the belief that there is an ultimate agency that predetermines our lives; I do not underplay the significance of coincidence and randomness in our world. But at the same time, I believe that when logic and reasoning defy us, there may be something unexplainable guiding us. Perhaps, fate.

Whatever Lola Wants

Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets
And little man, little Lola wants you
Make up your mind to have no regrets
Recline yourself, resign yourself, you're through
I always get what I aim for
And your heart'n soul is what I came for

Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets,
Take off your coat
Don't you know you can't win?
You're no exception to the rule,
I'm irresistible, you fool, give in!...Give in!...Give in!

Hello, Joe
It's me
He hits so far

I always get what I aim for
And you heart'n soul is what I came for
...Lola wants

...You'll never win
I'm irresistible, you fool,
Give in...Give in...Give in.

Bright and Shiny

Many people don't know that the human eye has a blind spot in its field of vision. There is a part of the world that we are literally blind to. The problem is, sometimes our blind spots shield us from things that really shouldn't be ignored. Sometimes our blind spots keep our lives bright and shiny.

Sherrington once said that posture accompanies movement as a

The Current Status of Clinical Psychology - Where Are We Now?

Man has produced many remarkable machines, some so complex that only relatively few people with considerable training can fully understand their workings. But man himself is far more complex than anything he has built. To understand him, to predict his behavior, or to change him in a predictable way is a challenging task of enormous magnitude. The attempt to understand man from a scientific point of view - that is, as an object of nature following natural laws - has only recently begun. Man is the object of his own scientific interest, and his personal experiences limit his ability for detached study.

U2 - Window In The Skies

Bono tends to trade in platitudes these days, but the savvy U2ers know just how to spin it, assembling a montage of music icons mouthing the words to "Window In The Skies," making even the band's rounded edges (and generic lyrics) larger than life, and larger than themselves. If you're not a U2 fan, they've thought of that, too; stick through it for footage of Jimi, Thom, Karen O, Elton, Marvin, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Bowie, Elvis, Plant, Flav, Sinatra, Kanye, Stevie, Kurt ... you get the picture.

Home

You know that point in your life when you realize that the house that you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of the sudden even though you have some place where you can put your stuff that idea of home is gone. It's like you get homesick for a place that doesn't exist. You won't have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start, it's like a cycle or something. I miss the idea of it. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place.

My father grew up in St. Louis worshiping this man - the blues, the songs, the energy above all else. He used to tell me stories about going to the Firehouse to see James and being the only white kid in the crowd. I can understand it. Crazy he may be, but listening to Livin' in America on full blast in the living room while your usually stiff and serious father lets loose on the floor just gives you a sense of just how magical music is.
