Dad: I will neither confirm nor deny the veracity of that statement at this time.

Mom: Depends where it was, honey.
12-year-old skater kid, into cell: Dude, where did she kiss you?

Willem Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk

Conceived in collaboration with the 65-year-old artist Jaap Drupsteen, the structure’s panels are imprinted with famous images from Dutch television: the justice minister riding his bicycle, say, or Johan Cruyff scoring a goal. Using computer technology, Mr. Drupsteen ran the images together and baked them into the glass.

The effect is mesmerizing. The images are only barely discernible from certain angles, as if the building were imprinted with the faint traces of shared memories. But the exterior facades are also a sly critique of contemporary culture. The blur of images conveys the daily bombardment from the Internet, television, movies and newspapers, yet here they seem frozen in time, as if temporarily tamed.

This Week's Best

Some of the best quotes from this week's Overheard in New York:

Mommy's Not Done Tucking, Honey
Little girl singing in stall: It's okay that Mommy is a man, Mommy is a man, Mommy is a man! It's okay that...
Mom: Brooke! Jesus Christ!
Little girl: Oh, Mommy is a man la la la la la! Can we get tacos?

AMBIGUITY

Will the boy get the girl in the end
Will it turn out the way we want it to
Will the good guys win
If you watch enough television or movies
You find yourself expecting these neat resolutions
We’ve become addicted to happy endings, to closure
But life, is all about the ambiguities
And it has been said that the only certainty there is in life
is that you never know what’s going to happen.

If only this was real...

That I would be good even if I got the thumbs down
That I would be good if I got and stayed sick

Sia ~ Breathe Me

Help, I have done it again
I have been here many times before
Hurt myself again today
And, the worst part is there's no-one else to blame

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I'm needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Ouch I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found,
Yeah I think that I might break
I've lost myself again and I feel unsafe

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I'm needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Dracula Getting a Sequel: The Un-Dead?

"The scoop at BlackFilm.com reveals that they're already got a director and a cast set for the sequel to Dracula titled The Un-Dead that's being made. This whole cast sounds like a bit too sweet of a deal and the director seems like an odd choice, so take all of it with a grain of salt. However the idea of a sequel might be an interesting film.

It was confirmed already last year by Variety that The Un-Dead was being made, this rumor that comes today is simply announcing the director, Ernest Dickerson (Bulletproof, Blind Faith), and cast: Javier Bardem will play Dracula, Monica Bellucci will play Lucy, and John Hurt will play Professor Van Helsing. Does this seem a little too good to be true?

In this sequel set 25 years after the original Bram Stoker novel, it features all the surviving protagonists, including Jonathan and Mina Harker and Professor Van Helsing, along with Inspector Cotford, a character cut from the original manuscript. The Stoker family has officially recognized the screenplay, the first adaptation to receive such approval since the original 1931 film. With everything that is known out, I'll end with a question: is there anyone who's excited for another Dracula movie and thinks this sounds like it could turn out good?"

ANNA NALICK LYRICS

"Breathe (2 AM)"

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
"Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?,
I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season"
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize,
Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe
Oh breathe, just breathe

On Predicting Violence

Stephen King on predicting violence

''Certainly in this sensitized day and age, my own college writing would have raised red flags, and I'm certain someone would have tabbed me as mentally ill because of them.'' - Stephen King

EDITORS' NOTE: In the wake of the Virginia Tech murders and subsequent reports that Cho Seung-Hui had raised alarms in the English department with his writing, we asked novelist and Entertainment Weekly contributing editor Stephen King for his thoughts on the links between the creative process and violence. Where, exactly, does one draw the line between imagination and disturbing expression that should raise red flags?

I've thought about it, of course. Certainly in this sensitized day and age, my own college writing — including a short story called ''Cain Rose Up'' and the novel RAGE — would have raised red flags, and I'm certain someone would have tabbed me as mentally ill because of them, even though I interacted in class, never took pictures of girls' legs with my cell phone (in 1970, WHAT cell phones?), and never signed my work with a ?.

As a teacher, I had one student — I will call him George — who raised red flags galore in my own mind: stories about flaying women alive, dismemberment, and, the capper, ''getting back at THEM.'' George was very quiet, and verbally inarticulate. It was only in his written work that he spewed these relentless scenes of gore and torture. His job was in the University Bookstore, and when I inquired about him once, I was told he was a good worker, but ''quiet.'' I thought, ''Whoa, if some kid is ever gonna blow, it'll be this one.'' He never did. But that was in the days before a gun-totin' serial killer could get top billing on the Nightly News and possibly the covers of national magazines.

For most creative people, the imagination serves as an excretory channel for violence: We visualize what we will never actually do (James Patterson, for instance, a nice man who has all too often worked the street that my old friend George used to work). Cho doesn't strike me as in the least creative, however. Dude was crazy. Dude was, in the memorable phrasing of Nikki Giovanni, ''just mean.'' Essentially there's no story here, except for a paranoid a--hole who went DEFCON-1. He may have been inspired by Columbine, but only because he was too dim to think up such a scenario on his own.

On the whole, I don't think you can pick these guys out based on their work, unless you look for violence unenlivened by any real talent.

Happiness

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Happiness is an emotional or affective state that is characterized by feelings of enjoyment and satisfaction. As a state and a subject, it has been pursued and commented on extensively throughout world history. This reflects the universal importance that humans place on happiness.

In the Nicomachean Ethics, written in 350 B.C.E., Aristotle stated that happiness is the only thing that humans desire for its own sake. He observed that men sought riches not for the sake of being rich, but to be happy (although the term we translate as 'happiness' in Aristotle cannot be adequately defined as either an emotion or a state). Those who sought fame desired it not to be famous, but because they believed fame would bring them happiness. Many ethicists make arguments for how humans should behave, either individually or collectively, based on the resulting happiness of such behavior. Utilitarians, such as John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham, advocated the greatest happiness principle as a guide for ethical behavior.

Chuck Palahniuk is delicious

Twisted Sister
Drugs, murder, kinky sex, flying mice: just another day for Chuck Palahniuk
By Matt Thompson

At a recent reading in El Cajon, California, someone asked Chuck Palahniuk to name the one thing he couldn't make funny. "Cruelty to animals," he replied. An hour later, as he sat inscribing copies of his books for queuing fans, a blur passed before his eyes. And then another one. A small group of men had shoved through the crowd and was pelting him with white mice from a pet store down the street. "They were throwing them so hard their necks were breaking," he says.

Of course, Palahniuk's no stranger to senseless brutality—on or off the page. His books, including the cult classic Fight Club, are awash in spilt entrails, disfiguring diseases, and grisly accidents. An analyst might say his obsession with the macabre owes something to family history, including the murder-suicide of his paternal grandparents. In 1999, shortly before Brad Pitt first explained the rules of Fight Club to movie audiences, Palahniuk's father was also murdered—shot mid-tryst by the enraged ex-husband of a woman he had just met through a personal ad. The writer used the killer's subsequent trial and execution as grist for his 2002 novel, Lullaby.

His latest book, Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey (Doubleday, $24.95), covers similarly blood-soaked terrain. It follows a cadre of misfits who intentionally wreck their cars on busy city streets. One of them—possessed with superhuman cunnilingual skills and a fetish for venomous spiders—may or may not be Patient Zero of a world-crippling rabies epidemic. If this all sounds messy to you ... well, it is.

Then there's his sex life. In the fall of 2003, Palahniuk heard that Entertainment Weekly was planning to out him in an upcoming issue. (At the time, he claims, "Almost a dozen different journalists were asking me for money in order to protect my privacy.") Instead of waiting to see what they'd publish, Palahniuk decided to out himself on a fan site. When the EW piece appeared weeks later, there was no mention of his heretofore secret sexuality, though he claims he doesn't regret his decision. "It really had to happen," says the author, who lives with his boyfriend in Portland, Oregon.

Predictably, Palahniuk's announcement sent shock waves through the more aggressively hetero elements of his fan base, prompting some to reexamine his work through a rainbow-colored prism: Was there more to all that sweaty man-grappling than they'd thought? When asked whether there is any Freudian subtext to the scene in Rant in which two adolescent boys get sexual satisfaction from sticking their greased-up arms into holes in the desert, the author is amused. "Oh my God!" he gasps, sounding almost embarrassed. "You've got such a filthy mind!"

But in spite of all the lurid sex, ultra-violence, and hardcore drug use that fills his books, the closest thing to a common thread in Palahniuk's work might actually be the idea of community. From the basement pugilists of Fight Club to the wannabe writers of Haunted (his seventh published novel), Palahniuk seems as drawn to fringe dwellers as they are to him. "I've always tried to portray spontaneous subcultures where people engage in a short-term activity that allows them to experiment with different identities and social structures," he says.

A little like that gang of deranged mouse-tossers back in El Cajon? "I suppose," he says, sighing. "Though sometimes I wish I could hire someone to play the public me."

Train - Calling All Angels

I need a sign to let me know you're here
All of these lines are being crossed over the atmosphere
I need to know that things are gonna look up
'Cause I feel us drowning in a sea spilled from a cup

When there is no place safe and no safe place to put my head
When you feel the world shake from the words that are said

And I'm calling all angels
I'm calling all you angels

I won't give up if you dont give up

I need a sign to let me know you're here
'Cause my TV set just keeps it all from being clear
I want a reason for the way things have to be
I need a hand to help build up some kind of hope inside of me

When children have to play inside so they don't disappear
And private eyes solve marriage lies cause we don't talk for years
And futbol teams are kissing Queens
and losing sight of having dreams
In a world that what we want is only what we want until it's ours

Calling all you angels

Howdy-

Well, this is a first. Besides the photos, your profile is laced with streaks of sass and funk.... and it truthfully gave me an erection. I'm looking for more than just a pretty face; a girl with a large brain turns me on like nothing else. Kudos!

You wear white after Labor Day? I look good in white and don't listen to any of those fashion fuckos either. I also drive a white Maxima... and it's a manual transmission to boot. How 'bout dem apples?

I see one of your turn-ons it tattoos. I just got this wicked unicorn ink job on the small of my back. All the boys at the gym now recognize me as the Alpha Male. I'm definitely a bad boy, but one every mother could love!

Seriously though, you had lots of good things to say and you seem real passionate about life. So am I, and I don't even know where to start telling my story. Maybe I could fill you in a little bit, if you're interested (and you should be).

Take care,
